FIRST Explorer

Further Information

Recorded: 18th March 2010

Speakers: Jan Bergman, Swedish Institute of Space Physics and Alistair Forbes, NPL

The low-frequency Universe is virtually unexplored because it can only be observed from space. Observations from the ground are next to impossible since Earth's upper atmosphere effectively blocks radio frequencies below 10 MHz.

The FIRST Explorer concept shows that an affordable mission is now possible.

In this 2-part lecture, Dr Jan Bergman, from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, and Prof. Alistair Forbes, from the National Physical Laboratory will explain the history of formation flying missions and the astronomy science, followed by a look at the NPL technology, which makes the FIRST Explorer mission possible; and importantly, a low cost option for exploration of the early Universe.
