Digital manufacturing event provides networking opportunities for local businesses

Following the success of its Skills in Manufacturing event in the summer, the NPL Manufacturer Measurement Network held its fifth quarterly members' event in Huddersfield at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre building on 17 October 2017, with over 50 guests from local business and academic institutions in attendance.

Guests were asked to highlight what they enjoyed. Here's what they said:

The broad range of information presented to gain knowledge which is otherwise difficult to understand.

Stuart Thornton, Managing Director - M Thornton Engineering

Professor Hill's focus on doing things simply and cost-effectively.

Saf Hulou, Managing Director – Cimpol

Cliff Brereton's presentation as he made the subject of the subject real.

Mark Forkin, Quality Inspector – Mantec Engineering

Focused on Digital Manufacturing, the event attracted an audience from different business backgrounds including both large organisations and small and medium-sized enterprises. A variety of talks, including those from Andrew Hodgson from Siemens and Professor Cliff Brereton from OCF Data on 'Britain's 4th Industrial Revolution' and 'The Future of Manufacturing for the Digital Age', respectively, helped attendees to develop a better understanding of the complex topic from different perspectives.

The audience was also entertained by a measurement competition which involved guessing the weight of a jar filled with marshmallows in comparison to another jar weighing one kilogram. The winner of the competition was Russell Haigh from Pland Stainless Steel, who received the prize of a TESA digital caliper.

The opportunity to network with likeminded people is key to the success of events like Digital Manufacturing and delegates often find potential customers and answers to issues they face in their day-to-day business.

Guests also shared their suggestions for topics to be covered at upcoming events. These included: Additive Manufacturing, which is the theme of the NPL Manufacturer Measurement Network's next event, which will take place on Tuesday 16 January 2018 at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, Huddersfield. This event is being hosted in association with the Calderdale and Kirklees Manufacturing Alliance (CKMA).

Andy Morris, Operations Manager at NPL, explains: "Additive manufacturing processes (often referred to as '3D printing') offer a great deal of potential to manufacturers, opening up new possibilities, rapid prototyping, greater product design flexibility and increased product personalisation. Some industries have already adopted these processes, especially where design is more important than safety or functionality. However, the new freedoms created by additive manufacturing also mean new challenges with regards to product validation and assessment."

The event will help attendees find out more about the current state-of-play in additive manufacturing. It will also enable them to share their experiences and hear from people who are already working in this environment and meeting challenges daily.
