I have just taken my step gauge from the boot of a car. How long before I can measure it? (FAQ - Length)

The length of time that it will take for the step gauge to reach ambient temperature in the laboratory will depend on both its mass and the temperature differential between the car boot and the laboratory.

Ideally you will need to monitor the step gauge temperature and wait until it is the same as the temperature within the laboratory.

The other question that you need to ask is "What uncertainty am I prepared to accept?".

It may be that a 5 ÂșC difference in temperature is acceptable given the uncertainty required.
