How many calibration artefacts do I need to verify my surface texture measuring instrument's performance? (FAQ - Length)

It depends on the job at hand. However, you should have at least a range of step height artefacts (Type A), a range of spacing artefacts (Type C), a stylus check artefact (this can also give useful information about optical instruments) (Type B), one or more random roughness artefacts (Type D) and an artefact for checking the co-ordinate system of your instrument (e.g. a hemisphere) (Type E).
