Water vapour is the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere but some of its absorption characteristics are poorly understood.

The water vapour continuum explains how the amount of energy absorbed by water vapour molecules varies with changes in pressure. Understanding this continuum is vital for the accurate modelling of future weather and climate, as it leads to an estimated 30% difference in the energy balance of the Earth's climate system, and this research provides a unique insight into the phenomenon.
