Silver nanoparticles can be used as metal markers in tests known as immunoassays that can detect specific molecules in complex mixtures such as blood.

This work demonstrates and explains the mechanism of silver nanoparticle dissolution on the surface of a carbon electrode without the need for a chemical oxidant. This process can be used to develop faster, cheaper and simpler point-of-care immunoassay devices.
