SERS (Surface enhanced Raman scattering) is a spectroscopic technique arising from the enhancement of Raman scattering through molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces.

The use of different 'reporter' molecules gives rise to unique spectra; the technology can be used to quantitate multiple biomolecules in complex mixtures like blood, serum and urine.

Using the 421, 440 and 470 SERS nanotags, three cardiac biomarkers (CRP, cTroponin I and Myoglobin ) were detected in serum and their relative concentration determined using standard peak-fitting software.
