Have a go at eye averaging.

Look at the following fluctuating displayed reading and using eye averaging techniques determine the reading.

  1. Provide a humble eye average reading.
  2. Use the systematic technique whereby the result is taken to be the mean between the minimum and maximum of the observed readings over a period of time.
  3. Use the intuitive approach where by you spot check the display every 5 seconds and take the perceived mean of the measurement readings over a period of time.

What do you find?

One of our scientists came up with the following answers:

 

  1. Humble eye average -  130 cps
  2. Using the systematic technique – 130 cps
  3. Using the intuitive approach – 130 cps

The same answer was achieved using all three methods.
