Thorsten Sander
Current interests
Thorsten Sander is leading research and development of brachytherapy dosimetry at NPL. He is keen to develop both ionometric and calorimetric primary standards for brachytherapy and he has a growing interest in the application of Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations. Thorsten is a member of the BIPM brachytherapy standards working group and he is involved with different dosimetry calibration services, mainly the calibration of brachytherapy secondary standards.
Biography
Thorsten received his Master's degree in Physics from Hamburg University, Germany, obtaining the title 'Diplom-Physiker' which is equivalent to the MSc title in the UK. He worked for the Clinical Physics group at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London before joining the Radiation Dosimetry group at NPL in 1998. Initially, he was mainly involved with kV X-ray dosimetry and the operation of free-air ionisation chambers before developing a new calibration service for high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy based on a cavity standard. Thorsten has also developed an absorbed dose calorimeter for HDR brachytherapy and he has obtained a PhD in Medical Physics from University College London.
