Simon Hall

Senior Scientist

Simon Hall joined NPL in May 2022 as a Senior Scientist in the Quantum Information Processing Group within the Quantum Metrology Institute. His current work supports the use of photon entanglement for optical communication, Single photon detector calibration and methods to characterise photons from single photon sources.

Simon is a physicist specialising in optics, he is a Chartered Physicist and a member of the Institute of Physics. Most of his early career was spent at NPL developing optical instruments and measurement systems (Laser measurement, Adaptive Optics, LED lighting and Photovoltaic characterisation), resulting in 7 patent applications with 5 licences for intellectual property. Simon has also formulated and led NPL activity for multiple European Projects. He was awarded a visiting professorship at Huddersfield university in 2016.  His intellectual property won the IET “Measurement in Action” award in 2012. He was awarded the BSI Standards Makers Award for Leadership in 2022. He chaired the BSI committee on optics and photonics for over 10 years and has convened ISO committees. He is a member of the BSI Quantum Technology committee and is a member of the IEC Standards Evaluation Group on Quantum Technologies. He is an accredited technical assessor for the United Kingdom Accreditation Authority. Simon left NPL in 2016 after a 32-year career and worked in the Augmented Reality sector on holographic coupling into waveguides and then on Quantum Photonics for Cambridge Quantum Computing Ltd before re-joining NPL in 2022.
