Richard Shaw


Richard Shaw started his career at NPL as an apprentice precision toolmaker in 1992. For the last 19 years he has been in the Composite Materials Group conducting research and development work, including test method development, composite panel manufacture, specimen preparation, jig designs, test lab management and maintenance of test machines. Studying part-time, he graduated from Kingston University with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, with his dissertation focused on composite compressive test methods.

Currently a Higher Research Scientist, in addition to his research work, Richard is also a measurement service provider (MSP) providing consultancy in composite test method development, machining, and mechanical testing services to industry.

  • Developing composite test methods
  • Improving processing techniques
  • Advanced machining processes
  • Spending time in the mountains!
