Michael Hall

Dr Michael Hall is currently Principal Research Scientist in the Functional Materials Group at NPL. His technical expertise covers magnetic material measurements for operational conditions, magnetic field generation and measurement including magnetic fields down to less than 1nT for advanced sensors and reference materials for magnetic signature determination and electrical conductivity for NDT. Michael is also the elected UK expert on magnetic measurements for IEC TC68 and a member of BSI technical committee ISE/108.

Michael is a Member of the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Physicist.

Biography

Michael received his BSc degree in Physics and PhD in the GMR of Co/Cu superlattices deposited by molecular beam epitaxy from the University of Leeds. He continued this research on sputtered multilayers at the University of Cambridge from 1994 to 1997.

Michael joined NPL in 1997 and is responsible for magnetic material and AC conductivity measurements and development work. A recent project developed an open circuit approach to measure the AC properties of soft magnetic materials at operational conditions of stress, temperature and electrical waveforms. This measurement technique is used by electrical machine developers to select materials for advanced applications such as electrical generators embedded in gas turbines. He is convenor of IEC TC 68 WG2 for meetings held outside the UK, technical reviewer for CPEM and a recent member of the management committee of the UK Magnetics Society.

Michael has published more than 25 papers and managed the development of two International Standards and a Technical Report.
