Isabel Hessey

Isabel Hessey is a Research Scientist in the Gas and Particle Metrology Group in the Environment Division. She works primarily on the Defra Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) Network. Izzy coordinates the logistics of sampling at over 30 sites across the UK, dealing with day-to-day problems and liaising with local site operators. She analyses the filter samples collected by solvent extraction and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry. Izzy is also involved with the calibration of Condensation Particle Counters (CPC) and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers (SMPS), both for commercial calibrations and to support the Defra Particle Number and Concentration Network.

Izzy graduated from the University of Southampton with an MSci in Geology in 2012. Her research project was based in geochemistry, studying lead isotopes and trace elements in rock samples. After graduating, Izzy continued to gain experience in analytical chemistry working for an environmental consultancy where she specialised in air quality and emissions monitoring, as well as collecting and analysing soil and water samples.
