Ian Severn
Role

Ian Severn leads NPL's Acoustics and Ionising Radiation Division. The 70 scientists in this division deliver research and calibration services in a range of fields including sound and ultrasound metrology, radiation dosimetry, radioactivity standards and neutron metrology. Amongst other applications, this work underpins healthcare in the UK, nuclear decommissioning, wind turbine installation and academic research.
Biography
Ian has a BSc (Hons) Physics from Durham University, an MSc in Instrumentation and Analytical Science from the University of Manchester, and a PhD from the Brunel University Centre for Manufacturing Metrology.
He joined NPL in 1991 and was a scientist in the Mass and Density Section before moving to lead the Pressure and Vacuum Group. From 2007 to 2011, Ian led the Engineering Measurement Division, paying particular interest to improving external collaborations, particularly with universities and the UK's manufacturing sector.
Ian represents UK interests on the EURAMET Interdisciplinary Metrology Committee; is a Fellow and Council Member of the Institute of Measurement and Control; and a member of the Institute of Physics. He also sits on the Business and Industry Panel of EngineeringUK.
