Elena Amico di Meane: Dynamic gas mixtures

Elena Amico di Meane is a Higher Research Scientist carrying out research into standards for gases at low concentrations required to underpin measurements of ambient air quality. These measurements ultimately fulfill the requirements of the EU Air Quality Directives. In this framework she develops an understanding of the complex chemistry of the nitrogen oxides in the gas phase. Her work has enabled NPL to demonstrate the equivalence of standards for nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide by means of a high-temperature molybdenum catalyst and chemiluminescence detection. She contributes to the development of NPL's high-accuracy dilution facilities and a new accredited flow facility. She also works on the dynamic and gravimetric generation of formaldehyde standards and with the FTIR technique to carry out purity analysis.

Biography

Elena achieved her degree in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Turin (Italy) and her PhD in Metrology: Science and Technique of Measurements at Polytechnic of Turin. Then from 2001 she worked at the former IMGC-CNR and then at the former IEN, both institutes merged into the National Institute of Metrological Research (INRiM - Italy) where she continued to work until 2009. In these years her activity was focused on chemical measurements in the field of gas metrology and allowed her to develop her knowledge in the study and measurement of the gases relevant to the environmental field.

Elena is a Chartered Chemist of the RSC and a Charted Scientist of the Science Council.
