David Nettleton

David Nettleton oversees the government measurement research programmes at NPL that provide the UK with a national measurement infrastructure to support business to compete in open and international markets; the NHS to provide effective healthcare; and government to regulate for a safe and sustainable society.

David leads a small team that researches the current and future measurement needs of the UK and translates these into new work for the research programmes ‑ balancing the needs of today with the challenges of the future. The requirement is to set out research projects that have a clear route to exploitation, delivered through excellent science.

Biography

David is a Physics graduate from the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. After joining NPL as a research scientist in 1975, he has fulfilled a number of science management and leadership roles, and has represented NPL on a number of international metrology committees. Since 2004, he has taken a particular interest in how the outputs of the work of NPL deliver value into the UK economy. His long and varied career in the measurement field provides David with the wealth of experience necessary to head up NPL metrology programmes.
