Dave Worton

Dave Worton leads the Environmental Gases team of NPL's Gas and Particle Metrology Group, providing the traceability that underpins global atmospheric and urban air quality monitoring of greenhouse gases, emission and reactive gases and volatile organic compounds.


Dave is a Senior Research Scientist in the Gas and Particle Metrology Group at NPL. He received a First Class Bachelors degree in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham, a Masters degree with distinction in Environmental Geochemistry from the University of Leeds, and a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry from the University of East Anglia. Prior to joining NPL in 2015, he was a research specialist at the University of California, Berkeley, focused on developing and applying novel instrumentation to better characterize the organic composition of atmospheric particles and petrochemicals with implications for climate, air quality and human health. Dave has over 10 years' experience of analysing organic compounds using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques and has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers. He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and represents NPL on the BSI EH/2/3 and CEN TC264 standardisation committees.
