Clark Stacey

Biography

Clark Stacey is a Senior Research Scientist leading NPL's development of techniques for measuring thermal conductivity. This role includes ensuring the scientific quality of measurement apparatus developed for National Measurement System national standards, supervision of several research scientists and representing the UK on BIPM, Euramet, ISO and CEN standards committees. While at NPL Clark has also managed commercial testing services and the supply of custom-designed guarded hot-plate apparatus to foreign National Measurement Institutes and UK industry.

Over the last seventeen years Clark has focused on improving both the scientific and engineering aspects of thermal conductivity measurement. During this time he has developed a range of new measurement facilities and these national standards currently include provision of thermal conductivity measurements from -175°C to 800 °C, covering a wide range of materials including insulation, composites, polymers, ceramic and metals.

Clark is a member of the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Engineer.

Current Interests

Clark is currently in the process on designing a new facility for measuring thermal conductivity of thin sections of composite materials over the temperature range -100 °C to 250 °C. This new facility is aimed at providing significantly reduced measurement uncertainty and also the flexibility to make measurements in different gases, pressures and under compressive loads.
