Andrew Blackmore leads the Engineering Measurement Division at NPL. The division is made up of 90 scientists and engineers who work across a range of disciplines including dimensional, surface, mass, temperature, humidity, and optical metrology.

The division undertakes fundamental research in support of SI units. It uses its expertise to provide world leading support to industry and government to solve problems in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, space, defence, power generation, health and other high value sectors.

The division directly supports industry through the provision of calibration services, issuing 2000 certificates per year, alongside a portfolio of measurement services.

Biography

Andrew Blackmore has a BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering from the University of Surrey and an MBA from Henley Management College. He is a Chartered Engineer and the industrial liaison officer for NPL with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Andrew is a Prince 2 practitioner and Lean Manufacturing expert, and represents NPL on a number of external technical and management advisory boards.

Andrew joined NPL in 2009 to lead a team of scientists with responsibility for scientific quality, commercial business, operations delivery and line management. Prior to NPL he worked for Oxford Instruments plc in a number of roles across project delivery, manufacturing and procurement and latterly as operations manager responsible for all aspects of order fulfillment across the range of cryogenic devices and superconducting magnets.
