Alice Harling
Role

Alice Harling is a Project Leader in the Analytical Science team, where she manages European Metrology Research Programme projects and other grant based projects, such as FP-7 and TSB projects, totalling in excess of £1.5M per annum.
Alice works with scientists from Gas Metrology, Environmental Measurement, Surface and Nanoanalysis, and Biotechnology. She also works with the Programmes Directive, supporting the Strategic Research programme, and managing the delivery of these internal projects.
Biography
Alice received a First Class Honours degree in Chemistry with Studies in Europe (MChem) from the University of Manchester. During that time she spent a year studying at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier in France. Following this, she carried out her PhD in the Physical Chemistry department at the University of Manchester, researching non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma systems and their application to the destruction of gaseous pollutants and air pollution control. During this, she spent time working as researcher in the Excited State Chemistry Group at the Research Institute for Environmental Management Technology, AIST, in Tsukuba, Japan, on a British Council scholarship.
From 2006-2008 Alice worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Manchester on an EPSRC funded scheme, joint with a University spin-out company Plasma Clean Ltd. This research focused on the technology transfer and scale-up of plasma processes and commercialisation of their plasma technology, bringing their products to market.
Alice joined NPL in 2008 as a Higher Research Scientist in the Gas Metrology team, and in 2011 she was promoted to Senior Research Scientist. She led research into stable reference standards for global atmospheric monitoring of emissions.
Alice has authored over 10 peer-reviewed publications. She is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Chartered Chemist and a Chartered Scientist.
