Alan Brewin

Alan leads the Analytical Science Division at NPL where the scientific research associated with the mole (amount of substance) takes place. There are around 80 scientists in this team delivering underpinning metrology research and scientific R&D for a range of government and commercial stakeholders, with around 45% of activity funded by commercial sources.

Alan has also worked with EPSRC, leading strategic partnership aligning £1.5M pa of EPSRC research with NPL's and bringing new researchers into joint projects across the laboratory.

Biography

Alan Brewin received his degree in Physical Chemistry in 1995 from University of East Anglia / University of Massachusetts. He joined NPL in 2000 following participation in a joint industrial project. Prior to this, he was Chief Chemist for Concoat Ltd, working on product development for materials for the high-reliability electronics industry.

Authoring 15 scientific reports on lead-free electronics materials reliability, Alan was part of a team that lead NPL's lead-free research consulting to UK business and helped the transition to lead-free production in the UK, in order to comply with the RoHS directive.

He also authored the industry guide the 'Pb-free minefield' with the trade body the Component Obsolescence Group, and represented the UK on IEC, IPC, SMART and other technical standards committees.
