Open House 2018

We're opening our doors to the public on 17 May 2018. The opening will give attendees the chance to explore the laboratory and see first-hand some of the amazing research we carry out.

About NPL

We're home of the metre, the kilogram and the second. Our work plays a vital part in the modern world, and it has underpinned UK prosperity and quality of life for more than a century.

Our role is highly diverse and incorporates world-leading science and engineering that impacts healthcare, environmental monitoring, advanced manufacturing and the development of next-generation technologies and techniques.

There will be a variety of laboratories open in May next year, showcasing the many ways in which we work to continue to transform lives and support industry.

The cost per ticket will be £3 and all proceeds will go directly to Cancer Research UK

What to expect

Here are some labs that have welcomed visitors at our previous Open House events:

  • underwater acoustics labs, looking at underwater noise and its effect on the marine environment
  • biometric recognition lab, helping to test biometric systems for both government and industry
  • optical atomic clocks, showing the development of the next-generation in time-keeping

Exact lab openings for 2018 will be published in the new year.

Also in previous years the lecture theatre has hosted a programme of short talks throughout the day.
