NPL scientists help write the 'Handbook of Metrology'

NPL scientists, Jeff Flowers and Brian Petley, have written a chapter about 'Fundamental Constants' in the Handbook of Metrology.
The Handbook of Metrology is a two volume, 744-page reference book published in 2010 which would be of value to anyone looking for up-to-date information about the science of measurement. It covers everything from units of measurement, uncertainty, fundamental constants, and measurement across a range of sciences.
NPL's Jeff Flowers and Brian Petley, were asked to write the chapter on Fundamental Constants, as recognised experts in this field.
Fundamental constants, as their name suggests, are physical quantities that are generally believed to be universal in nature, and constant in time. Examples of fundamental constants are: the speed of light in a vacuum, the gravitational constant, and the Planck constant.
Dr Flowers and Dr Petley have both published widely in this field, including a review article in the prestigious journal Science: The Route to Atomic and Quantum Standards, and a book The fundamental physical constants and the frontier of measurement.
2010 is a special year for the science of measurement, as this autumn marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the SI system, (taken from the French words Système international d'unités).
