NPL scientist wins vacuum prize

Felicia Green
Felicia with a Secondary Ion Mass
Spectrometer (SIMS)

NPL's Felicia Green has been awarded the 2011 British Vacuum Council Junior Prize and C R Burch Memorial Award and Medal.

The award recognises Felicia's significant contribution to the science base of organic secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and for rapidly establishing an international reputation in ambient surface analysis using desorption electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (DESI) and related methods.

SIMS can analyse and characterise complex molecules and organic materials while DESI has a wide range of applications, including in forensic science, as it can detect trace amounts of substances such as drugs and explosives.

With great energy and enthusiasm, Felicia has forged an important link between the traditional surface science community and the burgeoning new ambient mass spectrometry community. The award will be presented at the British Mass Spectrometry Society Meeting, Cardiff, 11-14 September 2011.
