NPL helps optical testing centre gain £430k investment
LUX-TSI, a UK firm that specialises in testing of photonics, energy-efficient lighting and consumer products, has received a new £430,000 finance package, including a grant by the Welsh Government and a loan from Finance Wales. This will allow LUX-TSI to buy new equipment for testing of solid-state lighting (SSL) products, and create several new jobs in the process.
NPL has worked closely with LUX-TSI for a number of years and their award winning eyeLIGHT™ software platform, the first software suite to analyse LED, Lamp and Laser Optical Safety, includes software originally developed at NPL.
Good practice obtained through Measurement Network and traceability supplied by NPL's Optical Measurement Group helped LUX-TSI gain accreditation with the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS). Now LUX-TSI is one of a small number of approved lighting product testing companies (to ISO17025 standard) and also provides photometric testing of lighting and signage products under the BS EN (British Standards) guidelines for automotive and roadside applications.
Both LUX-TSI and NPL can offer accredited testing to the US Solid State Lighting standard, IES LM-79-08, enabling the UK lighting industry to access the global market through adoption of measurement best practice. This accreditation has helped strengthen the partnership with Underwriters' Laboratories (UL), to increase their reach and growth.
Gareth Jones, the chief executive at LUX-TSI, said:
"We experienced very strong growth in 2012 and growth projections for 2013 are even stronger, we expect turnover to rise by over 200% this year. This critical funding has enabled our operations to grow to take advantage of the future growth opportunities in the energy efficient lighting and consumer electronics markets."
NPL recently extended its relationship with LUX-TSI by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding, focusing on training and development of future products.
