NPL Fellow named as next Director of the BIPM
The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) has announced that Dr Martin Milton, NPL Fellow in Chemical Metrology, will join as Deputy Director and Director Designate on 1 October 2012, to take over from the present Director (Dr Michael Kühne) at the beginning of 2013.
The appointment will see Martin heading up the organisation tasked with ensuring world-wide uniformity of measurements and their traceability to the International System of Units (SI), a high profile international role requiring a rare combination of scientific, leadership and diplomatic skills.
Dr Milton joined NPL as a Scientific Officer and leaves, after 31 years, as an NPL Fellow and the Science Leader for the Gas Metrology and Trace Analysis Group. He has been an active participant in the meetings of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance (CCQM) and the Consultative Committee for Units (CCU) of the Comité international des poids et mesures (CIPM).
Martin has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers as well as more than 150 reports and conference papers. His work has ranged from the principles of traceability, the fundamental constants, ultra-sensitive Raman and mass spectroscopy through to environmental monitoring and high accuracy gas measurements.
