At the event, Ian discussed his work on the Acousto-Optic effect, and how it can be used to 'see' sound for evaluating the output of both audio and ultrasonic devices. While Gianluca presented on the close relationship between bubbles and sound, and on how NPL's research is helping the exploitation of bubbles for reducing energy consumption and producing greener fuels, tastier food, and less invasive ways to deliver drugs.

Gianluca said:

"TEDx was an incredible experience, different from other talks I have done before. I was extremely excited by the chance of reaching everyone else's iPad or smartphone - an experience I recommend!"

Ian added:

"I'm a big fan of TED talks generally, so getting to do a local TEDx event was great. NPL has a strong relationship with the organisers so hopefully there will be future opportunities to get involved."

TED is a non-profit organisation which started out as a conference to bring people together from the worlds of Technology, Entertainment and Design. TEDx events are organised independently to stimulate dialogue in the spirit of TED's mission of 'Ideas worth spreading'. Videos from the events are made available for free online.
