Helping manufacturers measure up

Andy Morris, Laboratory Manager of the National Physical Laboratory's (NPL) hub at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) in Huddersfield, outlines how the facility is helping manufacturers measure up to the competition, in Kirklees Business News.

NPL Huddersfield

The article outlines NPL's work in Huddersfield and how it is helping manufacturers with precision measurement issues. The laboratory is equipped with the latest co-ordinate measuring machines, which can provide precise measurements of complex components at every stage of manufacture, and also offers other services, including CAD programming.

The NPL hub was launched in 2009 at the University of Huddersfield, before moving to the 3M BIC facility in 2013. Andy Morris explains that when NPL wanted to establish a regional presence, the north of England was an obvious choice given the number of people working in manufacturing.

NPL's state-of-the-art measuring machines are at the disposal of companies in the region and NPL is engaging with many local SMEs, as well as larger manufacturing companies.

NPL has close links with the University of Huddersfield and is a partner in the new £30 million EPSRC Future Metrology Hub that will be based at the University's Centre for Precision Technologies.
