Dr Martin Seah and Dr Brian Bowsher recognised for their work in metrology

Dr Martin Seah has been awarded an MBE for services to Measurement Science.

Dr Martin Seah

Martin's research in to X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) has been the basis of the UK becoming a world leader in XPS instrumentation. This has also led to real-time in situ measurements of corrosion in UK tanks, planes and warships, saving considerable maintenance costs for the UK. His research has been world-leading and much awarded, but he also systematically led a metrology campaign to ensure measurements in industry are fit-for-purpose and reliable, transforming the way research in industry and around the world is carried out.

Martin has invested much of his personal time representing the UK in developing international standards, leading the inaugural meeting of the ISO Technical Committee on Surface Chemical Analysis, which was attended by delegates from Japan, China, Poland, Germany and the USA. He then played a pivotal role in the BSI CII60 committee developing documentary standards for this commercially important area of technology.

Martin is currently an Emeritus Senior Fellow in Surface & Nanoanalysis at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), focusing upon sputtering for analysis of the surface and nanoparticles, secondary ion mass spectrometry for organic materials and analytical nanomechanics.

Dr Brian Bowsher has been awarded an OBE for his contribution to national and international metrology.

Dr Brian Bowsher

Brian was Managing Director of NPL from 2009 to 2015 and led NPL through a period of change in ownership, whilst improving science output and research excellence. He increased the laboratory's international status and continued the growth of commercial revenue outside the baseline government funding, whilst remaining aligned to the laboratory's mission to provide the measurement capability that underpins the UK's prosperity and quality of life.

Brian took a personal lead in many of the international activities, ensuring NPL maintained its position as one of the leading National Measurement Institutes in the world. His connections and scientific reputation, coupled with the stronger reputation of NPL, saw him elected to the global committee that oversees metrology worldwide, where he played a major role in making the organisation fit for the demands of the 21st century.

Brian led with passion, professionalism and integrity and has remained a close friend and collaborator to NPL during his very brief period of retirement, and then as Chief Executive of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
