Counting and Speciation Network on behalf of Defra
The information is based on an NPL report 'CPEA 28: Airborne particulate concentrations and numbers in the United Kingdom (phase 2) annual report 2010' that is available on the Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) website.
NPL manages the Particle Counting and Speciation Network on behalf of Defra, which was established to research the nature of particulate matter in ambient air. Particulates are known to exacerbate symptoms of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and are also known to contribute to climate change, so the requirement for accurate measurement at UK sites is important.
