Materials problems faced by industry tend to be complex in nature, involving interactions between different materials, including alloys, ceramics, glasses, cements and minerals, as well as melts, aqueous solutions and gases. The number of process variables is often quite large, making feasibility studies and experimental optimisation expensive.
MTDATA is a software/data package for the calculation of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties in multicomponent multiphase systems using critically assessed thermodynamic data. It has numerous applications in the fields of metallurgy, chemistry, materials science, and geochemistry depending only on the data available. Problems of mixed character can be handled, for example equilibria involving the interaction between liquid and solid alloys and matte, slag and gas phases. The thermodynamic models necessary to describe the properties of a wide range of phase types are incorporated in the software and database structures.
MTDATA computes chemical and phase equilibrium as a function of composition and conditions, with results presented as tables or diagrams. The calculations can also be linked to process modelling software, thereby enabling kinetic problems to be solved.
The benefits of MTDATA are improved understanding and prediction of processes as a whole, more efficient direction of experiment, energy savings and avoidance of pollution and corrosion. MTDATA has been successfully used by industry, research centres and university groups in the following areas:
- Alloy development
- Extraction and recycling
- Energy conversion
- Joining
- Materials processing
- Corrosion and deposition
- Chemistry in technology
- Electronic and magnetic materials
- Environmental control
- Polymers
MTDATA has long been one of the world's foremost thermochemical modelling packages. Developed at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK's national measurement standards laboratory, it has proved itself over many years of use in solving practical problems such as the optimisation of pyrometallurgical processes.
MTDATA for Windows combines the power and reliability of MTDATA with the ease of use and versatility of Windows. This allows you to benefit from the opportunities for improved process control and understanding that MTDATA offers without devoting time to learning how to use the software.
Features of MTDATA for Windows include:
- Automatic calculation of binary and ternary phase diagrams
- Full support for Windows printing operations
- Wide range of phase types
- Flexible and powerful database management
- The most reliable equilibrium calculations available
- Access to a wide range of critically assessed thermodynamic data
- Access to the character interface of 'classic' MTDATA if desired
MTDATA for Windows has been designed to take full advantage of the Windows interface. With just a few simple clicks of the mouse you can calculate a phase diagram, compute a series of complex equilibria, or examine the thermochemical properties of multicomponent industrial alloys. Benefits that Windows bestows, such as multi-tasking and print formatting are automatically available. Windows standards of consistency and compatibility means that MTDATA for Windows is as intuitive and accessible for occasional users as it is for regular users.
