Corrosion example

Gateway to Expertise

Incorporating the former National Corrosion Service (NCS)

Advice can now be obtained from the experts at NPL, and other sources, on problems resulting from a wide range of deterioration mechanisms, including the effects of wear, fatigue and high temperature exposure, and other processes specific to polymers, composites and ceramics.

Because of its major impact on the economy, corrosion continues to figure prominently in the remit of the new service.

The Helpline provides access to an impartial advisory service to British Registered Companies and residents

NPL experts can provide assistance with failure analysis and materials selection.

Recent examples include failures of steel pressure vessels and pipework due to corrosion and environmentally assisted fatigue, of steel ropes due to tribocorrosion and of brass adaptors and bronnze nuts due to stress corrosion cracking, and advice on materials selection for service in aggressive environments including sulphuric acid and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid.  Help is available on problems relating to polymers and composites.

Lifetime Management of Materials products & services

  • Corrosion control has a positive effect on business and should be audited regularly. Improved communication in the supply chain and the use of experts to prevent corrosion would significantly reduce the impact on all parties. Loss of control can have severe consequences.
  • Users of paints - and any other products containing organic solvents - will soon face a further change in the regulations governing the release of solvent into the atmosphere.
  • The importance of corrosion control - it is of paramount importance that the Oil and Gas industry provides a constant supply of its products to users whilst managing the impact on the environment and complying with stringent safety targets.
  • Services Products & Expertise National Directory (SPEND) providing UK companies with the contact details of organisations that can help them control corrosion and other forms of in-service degradation of materials.
