Dimensional

Dimensional Metrology at NPL encompasses provision of national measurement standards for dimensional metrology using a variety of techniques including optical and contact measurement, as well as supply of measurement services, instruments and facilities, contract research, consultancy, training and knowledge transfer.

Dimensional research

  • The dimensional group have a wide range of equipment including Coordinate measuring machines, surface profilometers, interferometers, scanning probe microscopes as well as bespoke instruments designed and built at NPL.
  • NPL is the home of the frequency-stabilised lasers that provide the practical realisation of the metre within the UK. These lasers have a very stable vacuum wavelength (i.e. a very stable frequency) that is obtained by controlling the frequency to that of an atomic or molecular absorption.
  • NPL is currently engaged in research to improve metrology at the nano metre level which builds on a number of instruments previously developed at NPL which were designed for measuring surface texture and form with traceability to the metre.
