Terahertz radiation can see weapons, explosives, and drugs hidden under people's clothes. It is also safe to use terahertz radiation for scanning of people.

These useful features lead terahertz into another application: security screening. By using terahertz radiation, we are looking at innovative screening techniques, which are simpler, and could lead to a reduced need for hand searches of luggage and inspection of items. The new technique will be more comprehensive, and able to detect faster a larger number of harmful substances and chemicals; this will allow an increase in the use of security screening and simultaneously a decrease in the time spent for security checks.
