Piezoelectric coefficient measurement

Piezoelectric Coefficient Measurement Piezometer system

As well as measuring the indirect piezoelectric coefficient, NPL has several Berlincourt type systems to measure the direct piezoelectric coefficient by applying a force and measuring the resultant charge. These can measure the d33, d31 and dh hydrostatic piezoelectric coefficient over a frequency range from 30-300Hz. They offer a rapid and cost effective method of assessing the piezoelectric output of bulk materials in a variety of shapes and forms. In addition, NPL is developing a version that can be used to evaluate thin film properties.

Piezometer system

The equipment is being employed in a jointly-administered studio project concerning the measurement of piezoelectric coefficients, in which the value of d33 (obtained directly through measurement of force and charge) is related to an indirectly obtained value for d33 (measurement of displacement and voltage).

This is a commercially available piece of equipment that allows the rapid determination of the piezoelectric d33 coefficient for appropriately sized sample materials. NPL also has a Hydrostatic Berlincourt measurement system for measurements of the hydrostatic piezo coefficient, dh.
