Sir Ieuan Maddock

Born March 29th 1917; Sir Ieuan Maddock was educated at Gowerton Country Grammar School and Swansea University; BSc first class honours and PhD in physics.

Entered the Civil Service when he joined the Department of Explosives Research in 1940; working at Fort Halstead and later Aldermaston where he became Deputy Director. Appointed OBE in 1953. He was seconded to the Ministry of Technology in 1965, which later became part of the DTI, where he was made their Chief Scientist. Appointed Fellow of the Royal Society in 1967 and CB in 1968. Received a knighthood in 1975. Following the departure of John Vernon Dunworth in 1976, he was Acting Director of NPL until his retirement in July 1977.


Dr Duncan Davies

Dr Duncan Davies was Chief Scientist and Engineer at the Department of Trade and Industry.

He took on the additional role of Acting Director of NPL from July to September 1977 until Paul Dean took up the post.
