Sir Edward Crisp Bullard

Educated at Repton School and Clare College, Cambridge; first class honours in both parts of the natural science tripos specialising in physics 1929; research student at the Cavendish Laboratory 1929-193 1; demonstrator of geodesy and geophysics 1931; PhD 1932; Smithson research fellow of the Royal Society 1936-1943; joined HMS Vernon, a naval mine station, 1939; undertook investigation into magnetic mines and the demagnetising of ships; fellow of Clare College, Cambridge 1943; reader in experimental geophysics Cambridge 1945-1947; professor of physics Toronto University 1947 - 1949 Sc.D. 1948.

In 1950 he became Director of NPL until 1956. He was then senior research fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and subsequently assistant director of research 1956-60. He was afterwards reader and then first professor of geophysics at Cambridge.

He was made FRS 1941, knighted 1953, received the Day medal of Geological Society of America 1959 and the Royal medal of the Royal Society in 1975.
