Dr Reginald Leslie Smith-Rose
Educated at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith, West London, and Imperial College London; first class honours physics 1914; assistant engineer at Siemens Brothers of Woolwich 1915-1919; joined NPL 1919; PhD 1923; D. Sc. 1926.
Twenty years after first joining NPL, he became superintendent of the Radio Department for eight years until becoming Director of the Radio Research Station at Ditton Park 1948-1960. During his time at Ditton he became a world leader on radio direction-finding
He was Acting Director of NPL from 1955-1956 and received the US Medal of Freedom with silver palm in 1947 and CBE in 1952.
