Dr John Rae
Born September 29th 1942; trained as a physicist and was educated at Rutherglen Academy and University of Glasgow BSc first class honours in mathematical and natural philosophy 1964; PhD in theoretical physics 1967. From 1964 to 1974 he was a lecturer and researcher in physics at Glasgow, the University of Texas at Austin, University Libre and Queen Mary College, University of London.
He then joined the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell where he was industrial fellow from 1974-76; leader of the theory of fluids group in the Theoretical Physical Division and then acting Division Head 1985. From 1986-1989 he was Chief Scientist for the UK Department of Energy.
In 1990 he was Chief Executive of AEA Environment & Energy; from 1993 to 1995 he was business development director for non-nuclear activities at AEA Technology. He was Managing Director of NPL Management Ltd from 1995 to 1999, leaving to become Chief Executive of AWE Management Limited.
