Brian Bowsher

Brian gained his PhD in 1981 on Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Southampton. He has approximately written 200 publications, mostly on materials, chemistry and nuclear fuels issues.
Brian started off his career in nuclear technology, working in AEA Technology and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, managing various nuclear safety research programmes, including major projects in the USA and EU.
Brian joined the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in 2002 to head the Materials Science Division. In 2003, he joined the AWE plc Board as Director of Research and Applied Science responsible for the scientific and engineering research capability within AWE. In 2007, Brian became the Director of Systems Engineering (DSE) and was also the Executive sponsor for the corporate introduction of Lean/Six Sigma and system engineering processes.
Brian was appointed Managing Director of NPL at the beginning of March 2009.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Chartered Scientist and Chemist, and a Member of the Institute of Directors. He is also a member of the CBI's Innovation, Science and Technology Committee and a member of the National Defence Industries Council Research and Development Group.
In addition to his responsibilities at NPL, Brian also looks across the other national laboratories managed by Serco to share best science and business practice. Thus he chairs the National Nuclear Laboratory's management partnership of Serco Battelle and the University of Manchester, and is a member of AWE's Science Engineering and Technology Advisory Committee.
