Space

NPL collaborates with people around the world who want to use technology to explore the Universe, monitor the Earth or communicate globally. For over 40 years, NPL has worked with space companies and agencies, providing innovation in measurement research, technology and services.

How Can NPL Help?

  • Consultancy & Training - Since 2005, NPL has been providing its Measurement Strategy Review process, combined with its Accredited Training Framework Programme.
  • Collaborative Space Research and Technology - NPL is active in leading or partnering with organisations to jointly develop space research and technology for customers including the European Space Agency, the Technology Strategy Board, and the UK Space Agency.
  • Calibration and Validation Testing and Facilities - NPL makes full use of its 36,000 m2 of laboratory facilities to conduct calibration and testing, which are traceable to internationally recognised standards. We commonly provide antenna calibrations over wide frequency ranges, characterisation of novel structural materials, optical radiation calibration services and precision time and frequency comparisons.
  • Knowledge Transfer - Impact is as important as doing the science itself. NPL has a knowledge services team that works with organisations and thousands of individuals to assess and prove economic, social and environmental impact of pioneering science and technology, broker new business and generate interest through events and networking.

Testing, validation and calibration form a major part of every mission build, operation and the provision of downstream services, where high value satellites are required to be launched and then operated for up to 30 years without maintenance or repair. This drives the need for satellite technologies to be 'right first time' with rigorous testing and validation programmes carried out on every component for every mission, to ensure survival in the extremely harsh space environment.
