NPL is working in areas including reducing the uncertainty in Earth observation data for climate models, increasing the robustness of wireless sensor networks, along with developing new quantum based technologies for faster computing applications.

  • Antennas for integrated communications technologies - Mobile phones, base stations and telecommunications satellites all require complex characterisation and performance assessment of antennas at the highest levels of accuracy. NPL's expertise and facilities help meet regulatory demand, develop low power or low carbon products, assess a product for new applications or improvement of measurement and modelling techniques for test facilities all creating competitive advance and credibility in the marketplace.
  • Wireless sensors and networks - Wireless sensors and networks are widely used in applications as diverse as assisted living and environmental monitoring. NPL is developing sensors for new applications from asset monitoring to food processing. Our technology and services enable whole system performance assessments and quantification of resilience and reliability of wireless sensor networks, which will improve your understanding and confidence in your system.
  • Innovation in location and timing - Timing is a critical part of society, controlling many aspects of daily life, including transport, banking and financial trading, telecommunications and power networks. As the guardian of the UK Timescale, which contributes to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) timing, NPL provides unique capability, facilities and reference standards to understand the resilience and integrity of timing systems performance.
  • Climate change model validation - NPL's expertise in the area of quality assurance and quality control of data can be used to validate complex models to ensure their continued accuracy and reliability. NPL is working with both industry and government to help improve the traceability of measurements made for the understanding of climate change through providing calibration, characterisation and advice for sub-systems and components for satellite instruments, 'end to end' pre-launch calibration through to the calibration of instrumentation used for vicarious calibration.
  • New materials development - NPL's expertise in the area of functional and multifunctional materials can help companies review new materials for fit-for-purpose application along with assessing their performance under different environmental conditions.
