Lockheed Martin, leading systems supplier and integrator to the global defence market, has become accredited to deliver NPL's Dimensional Measurement Training programme.

Calibration technician, Anamul Haque, is one of three staff accredited to deliver the best in class training to Lockheed Martin employees at Ampthill in Bedfordshire:

"We have found the course instils a questioning culture in our metrology methods. NPL's framework gives you the confidence to make the right measurement first time, every time. Our aim is a reduction in general waste and repeat measurements - saving us both time and money."

As the UK's national measurement institute, NPL is uniquely placed to communicate measurement expertise to industry and help apply it to quality and production procedures. Its Dimensional Measurement Training course comprises four levels, from measurement first principles to a potential sabbatical at NPL.

NPL Training is normally delivered by one of seven training providers, but companies such as Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, and now Lockheed Martin, have found it extremely beneficial to become accredited to deliver the courses in-house.

"We'd like the vast majority of the manufacturing and engineering departments to go through Level 1 of the NPL Dimensional Measurement course, with a good percentage going on to Level 2. It became clear it was going to be far more efficient to deliver these courses on-site at times which best suit the company and our employees. We will also encourage our suppliers to take the course so that we can have total confidence in our supply chain," concludes Haque.
