Optical Frequency

NPL offers a number of products in the optical frequency standards and metrology area. We have long standing research and development experience, going back over 30 years, and operating a number of systems in-house as the UK national standard of length.

Our lasers are used in many national standards laboratories and measurement institutes for the practical implementation of the SI unit of length, the metre. Such systems offer an accurate and effective means of delivering traceability for length and dimensional measurement within the precision engineering and manufacturing industries.

NPL beat frequency monitoring systems are used for calibration of stabilised laser sources used in precision length metrology and spectroscopy, intercomparison and characterisation of iodine stabilised reference lasers and assessment of laser frequency stability of industrial stabilised lasers.

The NPL low drift Fabry-Perot etalon has been designed to provide the best possible frequency stability, offering both tuning flexibility and low drift.

Our optical frequency instrumentation can be custom-built to an individual customers requirements. To support the full utilisiation of these products we offer training packages designed to meet the customers applications.

The following are available, either directly from NPL or manufactured
