Electrical Instrumentation

Our instrumentation, originally custom-built for our own research needs, has then been developed for commercial use after rigorous validation and testing. The range of instrumentation we can provide extends from standard temperature controlled resistors and capacitors to complete Quantum Hall Resistance (QHR) and Josephson Junction array systems.

The great majority of industrial processes and instruments rely on electrical measurements of one form or another. Whether, the high power electrical measurements that support the multi-billion pound UK electricity market, or measurements of the atto-Farad capacitance levels which exist between individual cells sufficient to quantify DNA, traceable applied electrical measurements are key to their success.

In support of such technology and industries, NPL’s scientists have developed and applied standards and methodologies to provided traceable electrical measurements from DC to 1MHz and beyond covering voltage, current, impedance and power.

We work in partnership with our instrumentation customers who are often National Measurement Institutes, commerical organisations or laboratories and custom-build instruments to ensure that their specific electrical metrology needs are met. Additonally, NPL can also install our equipment and train staff to ensure maximum utilisation of instruments.
