High Accuracy Torque Generation Machines

NPL has the capability to design and manufacture bespoke deadweight force and torque standard machines of the highest accuracy, over a wide range of torque capacities. This capability is demonstrated by a successful project which resulted in the UK’s first National standard torque machine.

NPL has a specialist, fully equipped design office and engineering workshop with craftsmen and technicians skilled in mechanical engineering. Facilities include milling, turning, EDM die sinking, wire eroding, grinding, and metal lapping. NPL manufactured its own 2 kN·m machine and NPL has also installed and commissioned a 2 kN·m torque machine for an overseas measurement laboratory.

NPL is a world-renowned National Measurement Institute and we have longstanding capability in developing and improving the facilities required to disseminate torque standards to industry at the highest level.
