Secondary Calibration of Microphones

Microphone calibration by comparison with a calibrated reference microphone is the only option for the majority of measurement microphones on the market, including WS3 microphones, and a well-designed system allows a very low level of uncertainty to be realised.

NPL can supply an automated measurement system comprising a combination of industry standard and specialised hardware controlled by custom PC software for comparison measurements according to the IEC 61094 series of standards. Pressure calibrations are possible for any set of frequencies in the range 31.5 Hz to 20 kHz for LS2, WS2, and WS3 microphones and for microphone systems, depending on the laboratory facilities available. Free-field comparison frequency range is also dependent on the laboratory available, but typically 31.5 Hz to 12.5 kHz. Diffuse field comparison capability is currently under development and will likely have an operating range of 2 kHz to 20 kHz. All measurements are saved to a database, from which they can be retrieved and output to a spreadsheet at any time.
