Motivated and creative scientists are needed to join NPL's growing and dynamic Surface and Nanoanalysis Group. Surface analysis techniques at scales of microns and nanometres are key to understanding and characterising surfaces used in high technology and innovative industries worldwide. The Surface and Nanoanalysis Group is internationally leading in its research of analytical measurement techniques for real life applications, publishing in peer reviewed journals and disseminating widely at national and international conferences and events.
Vacancies are available to advance research and to support the development of state-of-the-art surface chemical analysis techniques. These posts include the opportunities to study chemical functionalisation, innovation in mass spectrometry, tissue imaging and nanoparticle surface modification.
The materials of interest are industrially and environmentally relevant; in particular, they are the surfaces of nanomaterials, biomaterials and molecular devices. The positions would suit graduates (2.1 minimum) of chemistry, physics or related subjects with at least two years' experience of industry or postgraduate work, the drive to learn new skills and the desire to work as part of a fast moving team.
Creative, thoughtful work and good communication skills with customers are expected for challenging metrology projects as well as external contract research and measurements. Good report writing skills and fluency in the English language are essential.
The term of employment is for two or three years initially, depending on skills match with projects.
