Standards for underwater noise measurement
NPL is making a significant contribution to standardisation and improvement of the metrology for environmental noise measurement. NPL has input to a number of relevant committees:
EU Technical Sub-Group on Noise
The EU TSG Noise is an expert group formed in support of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive to provide guidance to member states in establishing Good Environmental Status for European seas. NPL has been an active contributor to the group and is a co-author of the 2012 committee report, which is available to download
ISO TC43 SC3
NPL represents the UK and is highly active on all the Working Groups (WGs) of ISO Technical Committee 43 Sub-Committee 3, which covers standards for underwater acoustics. NPL is the Convenor of WG3 (Measurement of piling noise) and contributes to WG2 (Terminology) and WG1 (Radiated noise from ships). ISO TC43 SC3 has produced ISO PAS 17028: 'Acoustics — Quantities and procedures for description and measurement of underwater sound from ships', which is available from ISO. NPL also represents the UK on the ISO Joint Working Group with TC8, also covering measurement of ship noise.
BSI committees
NPL chairs the mirror committees to the above ISO committees, namely BSI EH/1/7 and SME/32/-/13. NPL collates the comments and opinions on proposed standards for the UK underwater acoustics community.
