In-situ measurement of underwater noise

Acoustic pulse from marine piling

NPL can undertake in-situ measurement of noise radiated by offshore operations such as:

  • Drilling
  • Marine piling
  • Shipping
  • Dredging

NPL can also measure the noise radiated by marine renewable energy developments including offshore windfarms, and wave and tidal energy devices.

For measurements, a range of calibrated hydrophones and recording buoys may be deployed from survey vessels and workboats. Autonomous recording buoys may be used for longer-term deployments.

NPL can also provide measurements of ambient background noise over sustained periods.

All measurements are traceable to national standards.
